Travertine
The pool deck benchmark. Naturally cool underfoot, naturally grippy wet, and it looks better as it ages. Premium price, worth it in hot climates.
Porcelain pavers
Near-zero water absorption, holds color against chlorine and UV, available in high slip-resistance ratings. Very strong freeze-thaw performance.
Concrete pavers
Best cost per square foot, huge selection. Choose a light color and a textured finish, because dark smooth pavers get genuinely too hot to stand on.
Natural stone
Bluestone, limestone and shellstone. Thermal-finished surfaces give real wet grip. Every piece is fitted, so labor runs higher.

Barefoot test, honestly
We talk through heat and slip before color. In hot climates a dark paver can be twenty to thirty degrees hotter than a light one in the same sun.
Drainage plan
Water has to leave the deck without running into the pool or toward the house. On flat lots that usually means a deck drain, planned now rather than retrofitted.
Coping first, then the field
Coping is set to the pool with the correct expansion joint, then the deck is built to meet it.

Questions we get about pool decks & coping
Which pool deck material stays coolest?
Travertine and light-colored porcelain lead, followed by light concrete pavers. Color matters more than material for surface temperature, so a light concrete paver will beat a dark travertine. If you are in a hot climate and can only get one thing right, make it the color.
Why does coping need an expansion joint?
The pool shell and the deck are separate structures that move independently with temperature and ground moisture. Bond them rigidly and something cracks, usually the coping. A flexible joint at the shell lets them move apart without damage.
Will chlorine or salt damage pavers?
Salt systems are harder on hardscape than chlorine, particularly on natural stone with high calcium content. Porcelain and quality concrete pavers handle salt well. Tell us which system you run, because it genuinely changes the recommendation.
Can I replace a cracked concrete pool deck with pavers?
Yes, and it is one of the more common jobs we do. Depending on the slab condition and the height at your coping and door thresholds, we either overlay it or remove it. An overlay is cheaper, but only when the existing slab is sound and drains correctly.
