Hardscaping in Texas

Pavers That Move With Texas Clay, Not Against It

Hardscaping in Texas means building on soil that shifts with the weather. Blackland Prairie clay under Dallas, Austin and San Antonio swells when it is wet and shrinks when it dries. The fix is a flexible paver system set on compacted Flex Base, the local name for the crushed stone that carries the load.

Patios, walls, driveways and the rest

Paver patios and pool decks are the most common jobs across the state. Both sit on a thick base so the surface does not crack when the clay underneath moves. Paver patios and pool decks and coping get the same base detail, sized for the soil they sit on.

Retaining walls hold back the grade changes that come with Texas lots. Retaining walls need geogrid and drainage to stay put in expansive clay. Outdoor kitchens and fire pits add weight to a slab, so the footing has to reach past the weak soil.

What happens after you call

You do not have to be home for the dig or source the stone yourself. You get a written price first, so the scope is clear before work starts. The crew assigned to your job handles the material order and the schedule.

The order of work follows a set pattern. The base is cut and compacted first, then the edges go in, then the pavers. Drainage is placed as the base goes down, not added as an afterthought. See how the process runs from start to finish, and read what drives the cost of a job before you compare bids.

What moves the price up or down

Blackland clay moves with the weather, so it wants a thick base and drainage to stay stable. That base is the largest variable in a Texas job. The coast adds wind and water to the equation, and the west adds caliche in the dig.

Site access matters too. A backyard reached through a narrow gate takes longer than an open lot. Steps, curves and existing structures all add labor. The written price reflects those conditions before the first shovel of dirt moves.

The problem is not frost. It is water in the clay.

Frost depth in Texas runs from about 18 to 24 inches in the Panhandle down to effectively none in Houston, San Antonio and the Gulf coast. A patio in Dallas does not heave from freezing. It moves because the clay under it swells when soaked and shrinks when dry.

A rigid concrete slab has no give. When Blackland Prairie clay under Dallas or gumbo clay under Houston expands, the slab cracks. A flexible paver system handles that movement differently. Each paver sits independent on the base, so the surface shifts in small increments instead of cracking in one line.

The base is what makes that work. Flex Base is compacted in layers until it locks together. Water drains through the joints and out the base, so the clay below stays drier. That is the difference between a patio that settles and one that holds its line.

Why the base is thicker than the pavers

The pavers you walk on are about 2 to 3 inches thick. The base under them is thicker, because it carries the load and spreads it over the clay. In Texas, that base is Flex Base, the local name for the crushed stone specified under TxDOT Item 247.

Flex Base is compacted in lifts, not dumped in one pile. Each layer is tamped until it stops settling, then the next goes on. The result is a dense slab of stone that does not move when the clay under it swells.

Separation fabric goes between the clay and the base. It keeps the stone from punching into the soft soil and stops the clay from pumping up into the base. Drainage pipe at the base edge gives water a path out, so it never sits against the clay.

Retaining walls on clay get the same logic. Geogrid ties the wall back into the soil behind it, so the weight of the fill does not push the wall forward. The season window matters here. Summer heat moves work to early mornings, and Gulf coast storms and wet clay stall compaction after rain.

Questions

Straight answers for Texas

Should downspouts be moved before a patio goes in on clay?

Yes. A downspout dumping water next to a patio saturates the clay under the base. Wet Blackland Prairie clay swells and pushes the pavers up. Move the downspout to discharge at least a few feet past the patio edge, and let the base drain that water away.

How do you build a retaining wall on clay that swells?

The wall needs a base below the active zone where the clay moves, plus drainage behind it. Water trapped behind a wall on swelling clay pushes harder than the soil itself. Geogrid layers tie the wall back into the fill so the weight of the soil holds it in place.

What does hardpan do to an outdoor kitchen footing?

Caliche hardpan in the west and the Hill Country is rock-hard when dry but can soften when water gets under it. A footing for an outdoor kitchen has to bear on caliche that stays dry, or reach past it to stable soil. The dig cost goes up because caliche is slow to break out.

Why does a 20 by 20 patio not cost twice a 10 by 20?

Part of the cost is fixed regardless of size. The base preparation, the edge restraint and the drainage detail cost about the same for both. A larger patio spreads those fixed costs over more square feet, so the price per square foot drops as the patio grows.

Does a dry summer move a patio as much as a wet spring here?

Yes, in the opposite direction. Clay shrinks when it dries, leaving a gap under the base. A patio that held level in a wet spring can settle when the clay pulls away in summer. The fix is the same: a thick base that bridges the gap and keeps the pavers in line.

Start with the price

Every Texas job starts with a written price that names the base thickness, the drainage detail and the scope of work. That price is set before the dig, so you know what the build includes. Ask for it in writing first, then compare the details of each bid.
