Hardscaping in Tennessee

Patios That Ride Tennessee Clay Instead of Cracking On It

Hardscaping in Tennessee means building on ground that moves. The clay across Nashville and Middle Tennessee swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and that movement breaks rigid slabs. A paver patio on compacted crusher run moves with the ground instead of fighting it. That is the difference between a surface that lasts and one that cracks by spring.

The jobs we do in Tennessee

Retaining walls are the lead job here because slopes and walkout basements are common across the state. Paver patios are a close second, built to handle the clay underneath. We also build paver driveways, walkways and steps, grading and drainage, and outdoor kitchens and fire pits.

What to expect between the quote and the last paver

You get a written price before anyone digs. The quote lists the base depth, the paver type, and the drainage work, so there are no surprises when the bill arrives.

The crew assigned to your job handles the dig, the base, and the installation. You do not need to be present for most of it. You do need to confirm the layout at the start and pick your materials. The process runs from quote to final sweep, and the cost guide explains what drives the number in plain terms.

Clay swells. Build for it.

The clay here is expansive. It absorbs water and swells, then dries and shrinks. In Nashville and Middle Tennessee, the clay sits over limestone, which makes the movement worse because the rock traps water above it. In Memphis and West Tennessee, the soil is different, but it still moves with moisture.

A concrete slab is rigid. When the clay under it swells, the slab has nowhere to go, so it cracks. When the clay shrinks, the slab loses support and settles. Either way, you get a cracked surface within a few seasons.

A paver patio is flexible. Each paver sits on a bed of sand over a thick crusher run base. The base distributes the load, and the joints between pavers absorb small movements. The surface can shift slightly without breaking. That is why pavers are the right choice on clay, from Knoxville and East Tennessee to Chattanooga and the Tri-Cities.

Drainage that keeps the clay dry

Dry clay does not swell. The goal is to keep water out of the clay under your patio, driveway, or wall.

Start with the base. Crusher run, specified under TDOT Section 303, is the standard mineral aggregate base in the state. It compacts into a dense layer that spreads the load and lets water drain through instead of pooling in the clay. On expansive clay, the base needs to be thick enough to bridge the movement below it.

Separation fabric goes between the crusher run and the clay. It stops the base from sinking into the clay and stops clay from pumping up into the base. Drainage pipe carries water away from the edge of the base, and grading slopes the surface so water runs off instead of soaking in.

Downspouts need to discharge away from the patio and the house. A walkout basement wall needs a drainage system behind it, not just a wall face. On retaining walls, geogrid ties the wall back into the slope so the weight of the wall and the soil behind it work together.

The season window is year round, with a slow stretch in the coldest weeks. Spring rain delays the dig more than frost does. Frost depth is about 12 inches in Middle Tennessee, roughly 18 inches in the east and the mountains, and about 6 inches in the west.

Cost, explained without a table

Limestone close to the surface adds machine time because the crew has to dig through rock to reach the correct base depth. Clay adds base and drainage costs because the base must be thicker and water must be moved away.

Tennessee fieldstone and Crab Orchard stone are quarried in the state, so they cost less to transport than imported stone. The choice of paver, the size of the job, and the amount of grading all change the number. Get a written price for your specific yard.

Questions

Questions about building here

What is expansive soil and does my yard have it?

Expansive soil contains clay minerals that absorb water and swell, then release water and shrink. Tennessee has expansive clay across Middle Tennessee, with rock and thin soil in the east and loess and Delta soils in the west. A soil test on your lot tells you what you are building on.

How do you keep water away from clay under a driveway?

Water is kept away from clay under a driveway with a thick crusher run base, separation fabric, and proper grading. The surface slopes so water runs off, and drainage pipe carries water away from the base edge. Downspouts discharge away from the driveway so they do not saturate the clay.

Is a gravel driveway on till easier or harder than on soil?

Glacial till is a secondary soil condition in Tennessee, found in limited areas. Till is dense and drains better than clay, so a gravel driveway on till needs less base than one on clay. The main work is shaping the surface so water sheds off and the gravel stays in place.

Can an existing concrete patio be paved over instead of removed?

Paving over an existing concrete slab is possible only if the slab is sound and level. If the slab has cracked from clay movement, paving over it transfers those cracks to the new surface. In most cases, the old slab is removed so the crew can build a proper crusher run base.

What does an outdoor kitchen add to a patio price?

An outdoor kitchen adds cost because it needs a footing that reaches below the moving clay and a utility run for gas, water, or power. The counter material and the appliances drive the number. The patio itself is priced the same way as any other paver patio.
